Next Step: Planning & Housing Committee — June 3
The proposed development at 340 Parkdale is heading to the Planning and Housing Committee on June 3 — and this is one of the most important moments for community input.
What is the Planning & Housing Committee?
The Planning and Housing Committee is a group of City Councillors who review major development proposals before they go to full Council for a final decision.
Here’s how it works:
- City planners prepare a staff report with a recommendation (approve, refuse, or modify)
- The Committee reviews the proposal and that recommendation
- Residents can speak directly to councillors
- The Committee votes — then it goes to full Ottawa City Council
In practice, this is the last major opportunity for the public to influence the outcome.
Why this matters
By the time a project reaches this stage, most technical review is complete and the City has formed a recommendation. Decisions can move quickly. Clear, coordinated community input at this stage can still shape what gets approved — including height, design, unit mix, and public benefits.
How residents can take action
1. Speak at the Committee
Residents can register to speak (typically ~5 minutes) directly to councillors. This is the most direct way to be heard before the vote.
What to do:
- Email the Committee Coordinator to register as a delegation (details to be posted when available)
- Ask to be listed as a delegation for June 3
- Prepare a short, focused statement
2. Submit written comments
If you can’t attend in person, a written submission still becomes part of the official public record. Send an email submission before the meeting.
3. Make sure you receive City updates
Only people who signed up for notifications or contacted the planner directly will receive official emails from the City about the meeting. If you haven’t done this yet, email Jack Smith at jack.smith@ottawa.ca and ask to be added to the notification list.
4. Stay coordinated
Strong community input isn’t just about volume — it’s about clarity. Focus on specific concerns, be concise and respectful, and reinforce key themes across multiple speakers.
